Barbara Mikołajczyk is a professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. She is the head of the Department of International Public Law and European Law.

From 1996 until 2000 she was a Vice – Director of the International School of Political Sciences in Katowice. During the period 2005 – 2012 she was a Vice – Dean at the Faculty of Law and Administration. She was also an initiator and editor –in- chief of the “Silesian Journal of Legal Studies” (2009-2015).

In addition to working at the university, from 1999 until 2004, she served as a member of the Refugee Board of the Republic of Poland. She was a member of the Observatory on Free Movement in the EU (2005-2008), and was also appointed as the ad hoc judge in the European Court of Human Rights (2012 – 2014) as well a member of the Polish Ombudsperson’s Commission of Experts on Older Persons (2011 -2015).

Currently she is a member of the International Law Association (Polish Group). Furthermore, she participates in the COST Action on Ageing, and – since 2005 – is a member of the Odysseus Academic Network for Studies on Immigration Asylum in Europe.

She has authored books and articles dedicated to human rights of various categories of vulnerable persons, as asylum seekers, children, ethnic minorities, sexual minorities and older persons as well as free movement of persons.
