Max Planck Institute for International Law with Achilles Skordas Odysseus Member for Greece Open a Postdoc position

The Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law invites applications for a position to start as soon as possible as a Senior Research Fellow (Postdoc) (m/f/d) (Law | Political Science) in the research group led by Dr Carolyn Moser

About the group The matrix of European security policies has considerably changed in the last couple of years. To cope with increasingly complex security realities that transcend the borders and competences of member states, European governments have adopted a transboundary approach to security which rests on a broad definition of threats. As a result, the ‘borderlines’ of security policies are shifting—in terms of operational emphasis, territorial scope, institutional setting, and legal framework. The incremental transformation of Frontex is a case in point. The interdisciplinary BORDERLINES project sets out to disentangle the new legal and policy features of European security, principally border control, migration management, and cybersecurity, and seeks to explain how these features reconfigure the governance architecture in place.

Job description The senior research fellow will conduct individual research in the fields of international and European law and governance, with a particular emphasis on EU security matters, and contribute to joint projects of the group. He or she will be involved in preparing and carrying out (empirical) research, the organization of events, and the dissemination of research outputs. The position entails no formal teaching requirements.

Requirements A (nearly completed) PhD in law or political science | Publication record commensurate with the level of the position | Outstanding analytical and writing skills | Methodological experience with empirical research desired | Excellent command of English or French; working knowledge of Arabic would be an asset

Conditions of employment The position starts as soon as possible. The initial appointment will be for 2 years, on a full-time basis (39h/week), with the possibility of renewal based on funding and performance. The salary and social benefits are determined in accordance with salary group 14 of the German public service pay scheme (TVöD-Bund). The successful candidate will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary team that forms part of the vibrant international research community at one of Europe’s most renowned public law institutes.

The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages them to apply. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and hence encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

How to apply Applications should consist of the following documents: Research proposal (max. 3 pages), outlining the project’s envisaged subject matter and methods as well as its connection with the research group | CV, including a list of publications | Copies of academic records | Letter of recommendation | Up to two manuscripts, such as one chapter of the PhD thesis or a scholarly paper (no more than 50 pages in total).

Please submit your application electronically using pdf-files only to: borderlines@mpil.de. Applications will be evaluated on a first-come-first-serve basis, and will continue to be received until the position is filled.
