On 20 January 2021, T.P. Spijkerboer, Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Odysseus’ Member for the Netherlands, gave the opening lecture, as part of his Francqui Professor Chair 2020-2021: Confronting the colonial structure of international migration law.
The recording of the lecture is now available at https://www.law.ugent.be/opnames/Francqui
The aim of the course is to explore how the erasure of the Academia of the global south occurs in various fields of international law. For instance, what we know as ‘international migration law’ reflects a particular European perspective. The lecture offers an analysis of the North-European doctrine and its colonialist structure, and it opens the question on “how can academics confront this contested character of the field they are working on?”
