Our Odysseus member Lilian Tsourdi (newly appointed Professor of European Migration Law and Governance at Maastricht University) will be holding her inaugural speech at Maastricht University on the 27th of March at 16:30, titled “Rethinking European Migration Law and Policy: Constitutional Foundations, Administrative Governance, and Soft Enforcement”.
In her lecture, Professor Tsourdi will explore how European migration law and policy can be rethought in light of today’s pressing societal challenges. Migration is a salient societal issue at the forefront of global, regional, and national legal and policy developments. European societies call for the protection of refugees, yet remain concerned about the broader consequences of migration. National economies depend on migrant workers, while expanding legal mobility pathways remains politically contentious.
At the same time, increasing societal diversity brings opportunities, alongside expectations of integration. Interweaving her experience as both practitioner and legal and empirical researcher, Professor Tsourdi retraces the evolution of scientific thought and policy on European migration law and governance, while outlining future directions for her Chair. Drawing on interdisciplinary insights at the intersection of law and political science, she rethinks European migration law and policy through three key concepts: constitutional foundations, administrative governance, and soft enforcement.
